143 million Equifax files have been hacked. This is how you check to see if you are affected and how to prevent any unauthorized use:
1. There is a link on the Equifax website that will provide you the information on if you have been compromised.
2. Sign up for credit monitoring. Every time anything hits or leave your credit you will be notified.
3.Freeze your credit. A credit freeze allows you to seal your credit reports and use a personal identification number (PIN) that only you know and can use to temporarily “thaw” your credit when legitimate applications for credit and services need to be processed. The added layer of security means that thieves can’t establish new credit in your name even if they are able to obtain your personal information.
Freezing your credit files has no impact on your existing lines of credit, such as credit cards. You can continue to use them as you regularly would even when your credit is frozen. Visit one of the 3 reporting agencies website to complete this. I recommend freezing your children as well.
4. Check your accounts. Get into the habit of checking your bank accounts 3 times a day. Morning afternoon and night. Review transaction daily.
There is no 100 percent way to stop identity theft but you can decrease your chances.
