IRS Will Pay Tax Refunds During The Shutdown

In previous shutdowns, IRS was barred from issuing refunds. The Internal Revenue Service announced today that they will issue refunds to taxpayers even if the U.S. government shutdown extends into the filing season.

In previous shutdown contingency plans, the IRS would accept tax returns during the filing season, but refunds would be delayed until the government was funded. The IRS also announced earlier the filing season, which typically begins at the end of January or early February, would start on Jan. 28 this year.

In the past, the IRS has said it couldn’t issue refunds during a shutdown based on its interpretation of the Antideficiency Act, the rules governing what type of government work is permissible during a shutdown to protect life and property. Keep this in mind. Even though they are promising refunds, be prepared for a delayed refund anyway because over half of the IRS staff had been laid off due to the shutdown.
